The Sandy Springs Police cover 39 square miles of residential and commercial area just north of the City of Atlanta. The Sandy Springs Police kicked off police operations on July 1, 2006, taking over for the Fulton County Police who covered the Sandy Springs area since July 1, 1975. The department has expanded, from its original of 86 sworn officers to its current strength of 128 sworn officers, 10 part-time police officers, 4 reserve police officers, and 20 civilian support staff. This represents the commitment to provide the citizens with police coverage comparable to the national average of 1.8 to 2.0 officers per 1000 citizens.
